Lompoc Flower Festival

The Queen of Lompoc's Flower Festival deserved a sash stitched in her own town — so that's what we made.

Detail
Long lettering runs proofed first, then stitched slow on light sash fabric

Every year the Flower Festival brings Lompoc out into the streets, and every year a Queen and her court lead the way. This time the sashes across their shoulders came from our shop. Congratulations to Queen Mckenna Bohard and to every participant — being asked to do their sashes was an honor we didn't take lightly.

A sash is an unforgiving canvas. The fabric is light and wants to shift, the lettering runs long, and there's nowhere for a flaw to hide — the whole point of the piece is to be read from across a parade route. We hooped each one with stabilizer suited to the material and ran the lettering slow, checking registration as we went.

Before a single sash went under the needle, we digitized the lettering and stitched a proof. Digitizing is the step most people never see — translating letterforms into thousands of individual stitches — and it's where the quality is decided.

We're a Lompoc shop, and the Flower Festival is as Lompoc as it gets. Seeing our stitching on stage during the town's biggest week is the kind of thing that reminds us why we do this work here and nowhere else.

If your organization has a ceremony, a court, or a tradition that deserves better than an iron-on, bring it by. We're on the Central Coast, we answer the phone, and we'll stitch a proof before we stitch the real thing.
